Hello how the hell are you? If this is your first time here thanks for stopping by. In this blog we are going to talk about why you should learn from as many photographers as you can. You see when I was younger I was a structural Ironworker and I was given the advice by an older gentlemen that I should not just stay with one company my whole apprenticeship because there is so many different ways of doing the same thing. In a sense he was telling me that you can learn how to do the same thing different ways from other companies and people. I took this approach when starting to learn photography.

I was trying to find my voice in the mix and in order to stand out you need to start somewhere and grow from there. The best way to find your own voice in photography is to not just listen to one certain photographer or to shoot in one style. You need to shoot everything when you are starting out that will allow you to decide what you really want to shoot. Coming from a big city like Las Vegas there is a lot of potential for street photography and cityscapes. This is where my love for those types of photography comes from but living in small cities as I have been doing for most of my photography career that is not possible.

So I had to learn different type of photography which is now one of my favorite. You see at the core of landscape photography there is a set of rules that you stick to in order to get a good image and truth be told those are the same rules that are in every genre of photography. They are simple build your composition around your subject and that alone is the core of all photography. With that being said why would you not try and learn from a portrait photographer to shoot landscapes right. Now that just sound absurd when you think about it doesn’t it. The fact is they will have some great tips on how to use light to your advantage when trying to shoot a portrait with natural light so listen to what they have to say.

Street photographers use fleeting moments of light to capture something that is just amazing when done right. Why could you not use that in your landscape photography. For example, when you are standing on a cliff trying to capture a fleeting moment of dappled light streaming across the landscape you are in a sense doing the same thing as a street photographer who is waiting on a person to enter into his or her frame to show off that light. You as a landscape photographer are doing the same thing but you already have your subject you are just waiting on the light to be just right in order to showcase that rock pile that caught your eye.

Are you starting to see why you should be looking at other types of photography to really learn how to shoot. You see it all comes down to the light no matter what genre you are wanting to shoot. Yes, there is different ways to use composition for every type of photography but at the core it is still just about the light. Why not use the tools that are given to you for learning to learn how light is different in each type of photography. This will broaden your horizons in photography and then you can really dive into the genre that you want to later. Take your time learn about the light then you will see the light for many different types of images.

By learning different genres of photography you are going to become a better photographer faster then you would if you just stick with one area. The more you know about how light works the more you can apply it to your own photos. So go out and learn from many different photographers as you can you will be happy that you did. At the end of the day this is your journey in photography why not learn it the way you want to. Don’t just take my advice go seek others that have something to teach you about this craft and at the end of the day your images will stand out from others and one day I will be reading an article from you about how to shape light to your will. Thanks for stopping by enjoy y’all.
