Why even pick up a Camera when you have a phone?

Hello and how the hell are you? If this is your first time here thanks for stopping by.  In this blog we are going to talk about why shooting with a Camera is better than shooting with a phone.  A lot of these points you are about to read you will have heard others say before.  The question is why do you feel that you need to have a camera over a phone.  The simple truth is neither are actually better than the other.  I say that with an open heart and open eyes because I actually started out shooting with a cellphone.

I was going to be the best photographer with a cellphone and I was going to capture everything that I could with that phone.  I was going to use that to do my edits with as well.  The one thing that makes them so good is the compactness of them.  They are always with you so in a sense you will always have a camera with you.  This rings true for my wife who lets be honest takes some of the best images that I have ever seen.  I love the ability to just grab my phone and know that I have a good camera with me.  The phones today can actually blur the background of a portrait just like a pro camera can.  They do it with the use of software so they are actually manipulating the images and everyone is ok with that.

The truth about the cellphones today is they are good enough for the average person who just wants to take photos in his or her method of doing that.  They can walk away with some great images of landscapes, cityscapes, and street photographs.  The fact is the modern phone is capable of so much more than it was just ten years ago.  Then you have the fact that they are also a computer in your pocket that you can process the images with when done shooting it.  This alone is something to keep in mind when you are first starting out.

In a previous blog I wrote about why a computer is such a great tool for photography.  The fact that the modern phone is just that a computer you can save money on the whole setup with the phone being your camera and your computer you actually kill two birds with one stone.  This is great when you are first starting out and along the way you decide that you want to stay with using a phone as your computer/camera then do that and enjoy.  Now if you fall into the camp of seeing that the images are good but you can do better and want more control over your images then you need either a DSLR or a Mirrorless camera.

These two options will give you more control over every aspect of your images.  When it comes to photography I want the best images that I can get and for me in order for that to happen it has to be a DSLR or Mirrorless.  The phone is great but the limitations they have are huge when you compare them to a camera with a bigger sensor.  The low light capabilities of a larger sensor will produce images with less noise/grain at higher iso’s.  The biggest downfall of the cellphone to me is going to be that it uses software to achieve the same results as a DSLR/Mirrorless camera.  You will also have greater depth of field in a smaller sensor which means the images will look too crisp when looking at them.  This is not a bad thing when all you are shooting is landscapes but to blur out the background you will have to ensure that the subject is far enough away from the cellphone when taking the photo to blur it out.

When it comes to light weight and most portable the cellphone is always going to win and the fact that they now have three different focal lengths built in makes it even harder for you not to want to use them for everything.  This feature alone makes it harder for me to keep using the DSLR that I love for all the images that I take.  To go on a long hike it would be so much easier to just take the phone with me to get the images that I am after.  The only reason that I don’t do that is simple control over the image.  I can push and pull the files so much more on a camera than I can on a phone.  With all the good and bad that I have said about a cellphone they have their place with most people but for me I need something that will allow me to get the images the way that I want.

The main reason that I shoot with a DSLR is control over the whole image from the time that I snap off a shot to the processing and printing.  I want to be able to know that the image I take is going to look good at 4×6 to 20×30.  That alone is the best reason but I will go into a few more features that make shooting with a DSLR is better for me.  An interchangeable camera is the top dog in the camera world and they allow you total control over the images that you take.  The fact that you can control how much or how little depth of field is in an image is a feature that you cannot replace with a cellphone for me.

To wrap this up there is two types of photographers in today’s world. You have the average person that just wants to take great images with his or her phone and then you have the person that wants total control of making his or her images with an interchangeable camera. Neither person is better than the other they just have a different way of seeing the photos they take. Thanks for reading this and hope to see you next time.
