The Canon Rebel t6 is it good enough for Landscape photography in 2022

Hello and how the hell are you? If this is your first time here thanks for stopping by.  In this blog we are going to go over why and how you would want to buy a Rebel t6 for landscape photography.  The short answer is yes it is a perfect starter camera for Landscape photography and so much more.  There are many different reasons that I say that bold statement and I am going to go into the many reasons why you should start with a basic camera like this for your Landscape photography Joureny.

To start with the live view on this bad boy is so good when it comes to learning how to shoot in manual mode and it gives you a live histogram to actually see how the image is going to turn out for you.  You see being able to see a live histogram will allow you to know that the image you are about to take is either perfectly exposed or is under exposed.  This basic feature is a claim of fame for shooting mirrorless in today’s world.  You see the main difference in the mirrorless setup would be that you get the live histogram in the EVF but remember as a landscape photographer you are going to be in live view and on a tripod for most of your images.  This fact alone will void the reason for needing a mirrorless camera.  I learned this early on when shooting with the t6 and it made me not want to go out and buy a mirrorless camera because if you are shooting in live view for your images you are already bypassing the mirror.

Then you have the auto exposure sim that you get in live view and in my opinion it is the one feature that I use all the time and why I am shooting with the Canon cameras to this day.  I have shoot with so many other systems and I have found that this one feature is lacking in all the others.  I mean let’s be real the Sony mirrorless setup is a good system to get into but they tend to underexpose so much that your images will always be darker than what you would be getting with the Canon versions.  I found when shooting with the Sony cameras that I was always having to pull up the shadows too much and when I was shooting Canon I was able to get better images properly exposed.

Now that I am back to shooting Canon I found that I was still trying to shoot like I was on Sony so I have had to retrain myself on how Canon systems work.  The sensor on the Rebel t6 is only 18 MP which in today’s digital world is good enough for posting online so you will not be hurting for getting good looking images online.  The only downfall of the t6’s sensor is the lack of being able to get an image to be really good over iso 800.  The noise patterns are just to much to really clean up if you are wanting to print the images for a larger format than 16×20.  The dynamic range on the sensor is not the best but if you bracket your images and blend them in Lightroom you will be just fine and be able to get some stellar images this way.  In fact I enjoyed that process so much that most of my older images were done this way.  I would focus stack them and bracket them this was giving me files that were large but the details were amazing with that camera.

I loved the sensor so much that when I got my 60d I felt at home because they both use the same sensor.  To say that a entry level DSLR or mirrorless camera is not good enough to get great images means to me that you have not taken the time to actually learn and use your camera to its fullest potential.  Learning all the little quirks in your camera is the fun of shooting and by not giving them a chance is sad.  For all the good and bad that the Rebel t6 is given in today’s world is really sad in my opinion.  The t6 is a great starting point for a first time shooter.

The best part about shooting with this body is the light weight of it.  My god this little thing is so much fun to shoot with and the need to get a smaller system is not there at all for me at least.  Yes the AF system is not the best but when you know what you want to shoot you will be just fine.  When I was shooting the t6 I was using single point AF (the center point) was the best way to use it.  I found that I was not missing my shots at all and for landscape photography I was using manual AF for all my shots because I wanted to make sure that I was getting the most out of my camera and lens setup.  I stayed with the kit lens the whole time that I was shooting with the t6 because I wanted to be able to get the best image with entry level gear because this would make me better in the long run.

If there ever was a time to start out shooting with this setup it’s now.  I say that because you can get a t6 for $160 bucks and if you get the sigma 17-50 f2.8 lens for around $350 bucks you will have a much better setup than using just the kit lens.  To put that into perspective for you can buy a brand new Canon rebel t7 with a kit lens for $479 and the t6 with a really good lens will cost you $510 bucks.  You will have a better setup for $30 bucks more.  The images that you will get with the Sigma and the t6 will be so much better than what the t7 would be.  The only thing that you will get better with the t7 is a 24 MP sensor is not going to make that big of a difference at the end of the day.

This is the setup that I would have wanted when I was shooting with the t6 because I know that my images would have been so much better.  The fact is the t6 is something that everyone over looks today because it is a DSLR and I say that the DSLR is a great starting point especially with what you are getting with that little guy.  Now that I have covered how good it is there is one more thing that I have to say about this topic.  You should think about getting the Canon 5D mark ii and a good lens for it.  The price is going to be a little higher but it is just a pro level t6 with a full frame sensor which will help you when you are shooting in low light.  The features that it has are basically the same as the t6 so you would already know what you are getting if you have shot with the t6.  These are just my thoughts on this subject.
