Hello how the hell are you? If this is your first time here thanks for stopping by? In this blog we are going to do a long time review of the Canon 5D mark ii. I have to say this right off the bat this is one of my favorite cameras that I have ever had the pleasure of shooting with. The images that I was able to make when I had this body just were amazing. I remember the first time that I bought one and started shooting with it I was blown away and the image quality (IQ). The filmic look that the photos had to them were something that I thought that I was missing out on and I just loved seeing every image that I was producing with that system.

Once the honeymoon phase of me shooting with this camera was over it was time to get to work and put the body through it paces. This meant that I was going to shoot the night sky with this bad boy because that is one of the main reasons that I bought the camera for. I had the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 lens that I bought with it and man I was loving the images that camera was giving me. The night sky never looked so good in my opinion. This was my first full frame camera and I was just in love with this masterpiece of a camera. Then I tried to shoot some portraits with it and man oh man those turned out so much better than what my old 60d was giving me. I mean I was able to shoot at iso 6400 and it didn’t look like mushy noise in the images.

The love that I have for that camera was real and I could shoot anything and everything that I wanted with it. The images were so good that I thought there was nothing missing with it. I mean the look that I thought I wanted was finally there. That is when the first issue popped up for me. I was standing on the river bank shooting into the sunset and I noticed that I was not getting the photos to turn out right. So I bracketed the image and everything was great problem solved. You see the issue was the dynamic range on this was just as bad as what I was getting with the 60d. Ok I can handle this I thought no big deal. I shoot with bracketing for every image just to get a usable image no problem right. This was not an issue until it was right that is how it goes in real life not that love story that we all want to have.

Now came the second issue the actual features that the camera had were lacking what I was used to with my 60d so now I was shooting with body that was less than what I already had so now what you ask. You adapt and overcome what you are missing by learning newer techniques to get the images that you are after that will fix it right. No actually it didn’t the one feature that I was missing was the full articulating screen that the 60d had and the auto iso feature that went over 400. You see for all the goodness that the 5D mark ii was giving me I was missing the core features that I had grown used to with the 60d.

At this point I realized that full frame is great but the older models that are the pro models do not mean that they are better than the newer versions of the crop bodies that are out now. This meant to me that I was shooting on a pro level Rebel t6 that had waterproofing to it. I had taken a step back with my images because I was missing the level in live view I was missing the flip screen that I had gotten used to using. I was not getting the images that I was used to shooting. While it was a great camera that took lovely photos it was not what I wanted out of a Camera. I sold it and bought another 60d to help me get back to what I knew would work for me.

The overall quality of the Canon 5D mark ii is so good that you cannot beat it even today. I will end up getting another 5D2 at some point just because I miss that filmic look to my images but now I know what I am getting into. The 5D2 is a great tool for learning how to shoot in the first place and the price for a used one at the time of the writing of this is about 300 bucks so that is a way better camera than the rebel line up and you will get better images with the older flagship than you will with the beginner DSLR. Would I ever buy this camera again no I would not. I love love love my Canon 80d it has all the features that I want out of a camera for how I am shooting right now. The only way that I would buy the Canon 5D2 again is if I get a great deal on it lol.
