What will make you a good photographer

Hello and how the hell are you?  If this is your first time here thanks for stopping by.  In this blog we are going to talk about what will make you a good photographer.  The simple answer to this is nothing but your vision.  I say that because each image is a part of you and how you see the world.  I see the world for its beauty and how the little things are what makes it so much more.  The photographic eye that I have created is one that looks and sees the details in all that is around me.  I started out with seeing the world one tree at a time and then went into seeing the grand landscapes.  I fell in love with that for the longest time but it was time to grow and that is the key to being a good photographer.

It all comes down to knowing when it is time to move to a different type of photography.  As you endeavor on the photographic journey you will start to notice that you are getting bored with shooting the same thing over and over.  It is at this point that you have to just try new things and this will happen to you so many times throughout your journey.  The one way that I have found to get through this is to pick on lens and only one lens.  This allows you to work within the confines of that lens.  You start to see different images and that means that you are growing as a photographer.  I love that about photography as you are never faced with shooting the same thing over and over.  I have never shot with primes as I felt that they restrict you way to much when out shooting.  With that being said I have found that I am either shooting at one end of the zoom or the other and nothing in between.  So it was time for me to grow.

I decided to do this with starting back with the camera that started my whole passion.  I went out and bought a t6 and I am only going to use prime lenses on it to force myself to think differently.  This also restricts me in how I take the images because it will be with a camera that is limited on what it can do as far as features.  I have stated before that I believe that any camera is a good camera but I was saying that while shooting a body that had all the features that I was looking for.  The t6 lacks so many of the features that I have grown used to and help me while out shooting.  Now that is gone and I have to relearn how to shoot and I feel that this is going to make me a better photographer.

When you are first starting out you end up buying a basic camera and then you learn that the lenses are what makes for a better photo.  Some people are under the impression that its the camera body that gets you better images and that is the wrong mindset to have.  The truth is the features of the better bodies actually make the process easier which in turn would have you thinking that the body is the reason.  The body is just a tool for getting the images and the creative thinking that you have solving the problem that you are facing with the basic body you have to actually think about your image more so to me that makes you a better photographer.

For example, most people believe that in order to shoot the night sky you have to have a beast of a camera when in fact you can have a basic camera and get that shot with a kit lens.  It all comes down to learning the technique of shooting the night sky in order to get a really compelling shot.  The post processing of all the images that you take is what really makes the image for a Milky Way image.  I remember fondly shooting with the t6 and people where in awe over the images and when I was asked what I shooting with they were shocked because it was a basic camera and not a high end body.   You see it was how I was taking the photo not what I was taking the photo with.

The whole point of this blog is to show that the gear is not the end all be all for getting good photos.  It comes down to you and what you are willing to learn.  If you find that the body is holding you back you have to look at what feature you are missing and how to solve that problem with the current gear that you have.  I stayed with the kit lens for years not because I loved that lens it was because I wanted to know more about how to take a photo rather than buying new gear to get the shot.  I forced myself to learn how to take the images with the basic of gear to get the most out of my camera and lens.

The fact is you are what makes the images not your gear and the online community says that its the gear but that is trap that we all fall into.  I did and thought for the longest time that I had to have the best gear that I could afford to get the best images and man I was wrong.  You need to learn that in order to be a good photographer you have to make mistakes and learn from them.  The more images that you take regardless of the gear the better you will get a photography.  The key is practice and more practice in fact that is what you will be doing for the rest of your days as a photographer.  You have to shoot a lot and I mean a lot in order to be good but you don’t have to have the most expensive gear in the world to achieve it you just have to have a basic of the basic bodies and a really good lens.  This combo will allow you to get better images.  Enjoy from St Johns y’all
