Best travel photography setup for 1,000 dollars.

Hello and how the hell are you?  If this is your first time here thanks for stopping by.  In this blog we are going to talk about a great setup for traveling and photography.  There is only three items that are on the list and all together they will cost you 1000 dollars as of the time of this writing.  The three key items in question are a camera body and two lenses.  They are pretty much the only things that you will need to capture the images that are in your head while traveling.  I take this setup with me all the time and it is light weight and still gives you some really good images.

The first item in question is the camera body. You need one that has fast enough AF and one that you can trust while out there shooting.  It must also be able to shoot in live view to give you a accurate representation of the subject that you are shooting.  The image quality has to be good so you can print large prints.  You also have to ensure that the dynamic range is good enough to push and pull the files when you are sitting down to edit your images.  The camera in question for me and many others is the Canon 80d.  This body is the perfect body for the shooter that doesn’t want to break the bank and still wants to get great images with every snap.  You can buy this for 400 dollars as of the time of the writing of this blog.  At that price you are getting one of the best bodies for shooting video and photos.

Now that you have the body you need some good lenses that go well with this new body. The Canon 17-40 f4 L lens is one of the best lenses that I have ever put on the darn thing. I have even tested its sharpness up against the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 and found that it totally holds its own with that beast of a lens.  The 17-40 is great for getting the walking around type shots that you will want to grab and is just wide enough for getting the architecture type shots as well. I use this for my landscape photos all the time and it never stops impressing me with how sharp and clear the images look from it.  At the time of this writing you can find this lens for 275 dollars in good condition. That will give you an effective focal range of 27-64 which is just like getting a 28-70 full frame lens for dirt cheap.

The best lens in my book to take with you for street photography and other genres that you would want to shoot.  This lens will also give you a good telephoto option that you will want for the longer shots.  The lens in question is the Canon 24-105 f4 which when on a crop body will give you a great range of 38-168.  This is a great focal range and totally makes it worth taking with you on a trip.  You can cover just about all the main focal ranges for street photography and portrait photography.  The landscape images that you can get with that are so good as well.  I love this lens on a crop body as it gives you so many options for shooting while out in the field.  If you have been a long time follower you will know that love that I have for this lens and all the images that you can shoot with it.

Now that you have the kit put together you can see why that is the only setup that you would need.  You are covered from the wide (ish) end to the telephoto end of the spectrum and you get that with pro level lenses. The real world feel of carrying that setup around in the back pack is perfect for shooting all day.  The 80d with one battery will last you a full 8 hrs of shooting like it has for me in the past.  The lenses are perfect because they give you so many options to see the world differently that you would with other lenses. The IQ that you will get with the kit is so good and clean that you will totally love the way they look on the screen when you are done.

To close this out the price for getting really good pro level gear for 1000 dollars today is mind blowing if you ask me.  I mean if I had an extra 1000 dollars I could build a kit that would get me some of the best images out there.  The bar for entry into photography has never been better in my book.  At the end of the day you just need a good body and some good lenses and they are so easy to get today vs 5 years ago.  Heck this setup 6 years ago you would not have been able to buy anything but the Canon 80d. Hope that you enjoyed this blog and we will see you in the next one.  Enjoy from St Johns AZ y’all.
