Hello and how the hell are you? If this is your first time here thanks for stopping by. In this blog we are going to talk about the best all around Camera that is under 400 dollars. When looking at buying a camera you have to look at how it is going to handle shooting all genres of photography. I say that because if you are like me you find yourself shooting all genres of photography. Yes you have a certain genre that you love shooting more than others and you want the camera that you buy to be good at shooting within that genre more than the others. I find that I lean more towards shooting Milky Way photography and landscape photography.
With these two genres you have to have a body that can handle shooting in low light very well and it has to have good dynamic range. The body has to be good enough to show the details in the shadows and give you less noise when shooting in pitch black night skies. Most would say that you need a full frame but if we are being real the glass for that type of body is going to cost you an arm and a leg. I am the type of shooter that cannot afford much for gear so I have to shoot with older gear in order to achieve the images that I want.
The body is the one thing that you cannot skimp on when shopping for the right camera. This is where you are going to have to look at what features that you want to shoot as many genres as you can. This means that you need a body with a good amount of frames per second and a AF system that is good enough to get focus fast. The other features that you want are going to vary from genre to genre. The one thing that I truly need is Auto Exposure Bracketing. This allows me to get the most out of the dynamic range of the body. The flip screen is a must because I am always shooting low to the ground so I need to be able to see the photo when composing my shots.
Speaking of the screen you need to make sure that when you are shooting in live view that the auto exposure feature will give you the best look to the exposure. The AF system is the one thing that you cannot skimp on either as it will either make or break the shots that you want to get. I have found that single point AF works the best when out in the field shooting. The tracking system has to be just as good as the AF system. You need to depend on that when tracking a person or a bird in flight. The IQ is the one thing that is truly going to matter the most out of all the features that you are looking at.
With all that being said the one body that I found to fit all these boxes is the Canon 80d as it truly is the best bang for your buck and it will not break the bank when buying it. As of the writing of this blog you can find them all day long at under 400 dollars in good condition. This means you will be getting a body that is weather resistant and is a semi pro body. The amount of features that you get with this body are so good. Shooting with this body is a joy when you want to get the most out of your camera you have to look no further than the 80d.
I have used this model for well over a year now and it has paid for itself ten times over. I have used it to shoot portraits, sports, wildlife, landscape, and Milky Way photography. The 80d is the best all around camera in my opinion and it just gets out of the way when out shooting any genre that you want to shoot. The only issue that I have with the camera is the fact that it leaves you wanting for better noise control at really high iso’s. I get usable images at iso 3200 but that is as high as I am willing to go with it. At iso 6400 the noise is not good at all everything looks mushy and not good.
The other area that it falls short is extremely long exposures the hot pixels are a real issue with this body. The sensor heats up way to much when you are shooting over a minute or more and the hot pixels ruin most images in my opinion. The last huge issue that I have with this body is the fact that when trying to shoot birds and there is a lot of branches behind the bird it hunts for AF a lot. This makes it challenging that is for sure but if you pick your shots you can generally get good images. These three issues are not going to stop you from getting great images you just have to be aware of the downfalls of the body.
With all that I have said about the 80d your milage may vary on shooting with it. I love this body so much that I have sold all the other cameras that I have bough since buying this one. The 80d to me is the best all around body that you can buy for under 400 dollars right now. I am currently not even looking for something else to shoot with because this body is that good. I would put this up against some of the best Mirrorless bodies and still choose to shoot with the 80d for the one main reason that makes it so good and that is the battery life. You can go a week with shooting everyday and still not have to charge the battery. It is that good when out shooting all day you only truly need one battery. This alone is the best feature of this darn thing. The older 80d is still one of the best bodies that you can buy right now for cheap. Enjoy from St Johns AZ y’all
