Hello and how the hell are you? If this is your first time here thanks for stopping by. In today’s blog we are going to talk about the two C’s of a good Social Media Post. This may come as a surprise to you but it is true and there is nothing that you can do about it. The thing about posting on social media is you are putting yourself out there to have your images stolen and you are also putting yourself out there for others to tell you that you are doing either a great job or a bad job. There is no secret sauce that is going to make your posts stand out from all the other posts. The trick is instead get your post something that people want to do two things with it.
You have to make the images stand out to the point that others will stop in mid scroll to look at the image. There is two really good ways to accomplish this task. The first way of doing that is the first C and that is Composition. This is king for any photography but with a great comp you will be telling a great story and that is what you need for a killer photo. The story that the image tells gives the viewer investment into the photo. This also gives the viewer a way of connecting with you. The only way that you are going to keep the viewers attention longer than a few seconds is if you give them something that makes them think.

This will allow you to grab the viewer and keep them looking at your photo. The key to a good comp is three fold and I have written a blog about that giving you the key to creating a great photo. In short you need a good foreground that leads you to a mid ground where you place the subject and then the background has to and I mean has to complete the image. This will give the viewer something to look at for a while in the image. Then it will make then ask what you had to say about the photo. That is why on photo sharing sites there is an image and then the story and Facebook is the only one that is different in that way. They want you to read the caption then look at the photo which means they aer about the written word more that the visual of the images.
The second C is simply the caption of the photo. You have to be able to tell a good story as well as show a good story. You see out of all the images that I post on line the ones that do really well are the ones that come with a great story and that is it. In fact the moose photo that I took a few years ago go over 100k interactions on Facebook and instagram. The story behind that shot gives the viewer more meaning in the end. The story for that image in short is it took me three years to get that shot. The act of going back to the same spot because you heard that there is a Moose that goes there all the time but you only get two weeks out of the 52 weeks in a year means that that chances of getting that shot are low to start with.

You can have an award wining photo that you post but it will only go so far without a good story to help the viewer relate to the image. The relation that a viewer gets with the moose image is the dedication that it took three years of going to the same location to get the shot. The story is more than just a moose in the water at sunrise it was about two photographers sharing a laugh about how we have been to this spot so many times and never seen the moose but that morning we did and we got the shot that we both were after for a very long time. The caption just adds context to an image and that makes the image so much better in my opinion.
To sum this whole blog up the two C’s are caption and composition and those two things are going to work hand and hand like a good marriage. You cannot have one with the other. SO the next time that you go out to shoot think about the story that is going to go with the photo and how you are going to tell the story. The one thing that you can totally take away from this is in order to be a good photographer you also have to be a good writer. Enjoy from St Johns AZ y’all
