Canon Full Frame Cameras from the Golden Era: A Photographer’s Guide

Hello and how the hell are you? If this is your first time here thanks for stopping by.  In this blog we are going to talk about the best era for full frame cameras.  The reason for this blog is simple I am stuck in the past lol and I just love the way that the images look when shooting with the older DSLR’s from a bye gone era.  12 years ago was the golden age for innovation for the camera industry.  All the camera OEM’s were actually pushing the envelope making cameras that just made images that popped in my opinion.  I just loved how they were actually pushing each other to make better gear for us to use.

When it comes to this era for full frame bodies they don’t make them like this anymore.  I am a canon shooter so this blog is going to come from a person who loves what Canon has to offer.  You see the Camera industry is broken down to a Nikon or Canon shooter from that era.  I love the auto exposure feature in live view that the Canon bodies gave you at that time.  This was unmatched at the time all these bodies came out.  Now with all that being said we are going to start with the entry level full frame body that was offered in 2012.

The Canon 6D is a beast in low light shooting for slower paced style of shooting.  Yes that means that this legendary body is going to give you outstanding images of the Milky Way.  I have found that it truly just stands out even to this day for Image Quality.  The level of detail that you can get when paired with the right lens you can still go up against the newer models to this day.  The entry level for full frame was set high with this body because of the fact that the colors from this body give that vintage filmic look to them straight out of camera.

When you pair the 6D with a vintage lens like the 24-85 you really cannot go wrong for the general photography that you are going to be doing with that setup.  Don’t get me started on the price point for this setup today.  If you shop around you can find that combo for just under $350 dollars making the entry level a low starting point.  The bang for the buck you cannot beat the value that you will get with the 6D.  The body size is the same as what the R5 and R6 are so that means that it is very light and it will give you the ability to just get out and shoot.  Moving on to the next level of camera from 2012 gives us the Canon 5D mark iii.

This body is a huge step up in features that will make you feel like a true pro photographer.  The joystick is the one feature that really stands out to me.  That makes getting focus so much faster and easier.  The one little object on the camera really sets it apart from all the other bodies available from that era.  I for one love that so much it is what makes that my main shooter and will remain my main shooter for many years to come.  When it comes to the actual images that the 5D3 produces are just freaking wow.  The low light shooting on this body is the worst of the three bodies that I am going to be talking about.  That still doesn’t stop me from using it due to the fact that the colors are better than the other bodies.

The Canon 5D mark iii is a camera that will just be a true work horse for you for many years but did you know that there is an even better camera from that era.  Yes the Canon 1DX is the king of the hill when it comes to 2012.  Yes the low Mega Pixel body is a low light shooting beast.  I love the lower pixels due to the fact that it means you will really be able to use this in low light and get truly clean images at iso 12,800. The AF system was the top of the line back then and it still stands up in todays world for sports.  I use this body for the portraits and sports shooting that I have been doing more and more of lately.

The Canon 1DX is the top tear line of bodies that you can buy and the fact that you can get that for under 1000 dollars means that you get a true professional body for dirt cheap.  The value that you get from that is going to far out weigh the newer models.  The body is just so good and it screams to be shot in manual mode.  This will truly make you a better photog for the simple fact that you are going to want more control with that camera.

When it comes to this era there is two themes that come from those three bodies.  The first thing that is going to stick out to you is the battery life.  Yes you can shoot landscapes on the 6D for days before the battery will die on you.  The 5D3 is the same when just shooting with it and man oh man all the images that you can get off one battery for both of those bodies you cannot beat that with today’s camera bodies.  The 1DX batter life is almost double what you get with the 6D and with all of them if you are not using the live view feature the battery is just freaking wow.

The second reason that make these bodies stand out is the lower pixel count.  Yes in today’s world the larger amount of pixels is the story.  The lower pixel count helps you when it comes to shooting in low light and the noise levels are so low across the board for this line up.  The reason for this is simple the larger pixels collect more light.  This means that you will get better images from all three of them.  The three bodies with the lower pixels also means that your storage on your computer are not going to fill up as fast. You can get away with shooting with a 128GB memory card and it will last for ever.

I could talk about this era forever due to the fact that the bodies just worked and gave us the best images that we could ever want.  These bodies were the perfect balance of digital and filmic shooting that you could ever want.  I will always have one of these bodies in my hands for many years to come.  They are just that good that they stand the test of time in my opinion. The only reason for me to change them would be I found something better to shoot with.  The golden era for Canon was these three bodies and they still offer you the ability to shoot high end cameras at a fraction of what it used to be.  If you shop around you can get all three of these bodies for under 2000 dollars and that means that you have a line up of pro level bodies for less that what a Canon R6 costs for just one body.  Why would you spend the money for something that is better for AF and sucks at battery life.  Again this is just my opinion on which cameras are the best for me.  Enjoy y’all
