Is the iPad 10th Generation good enough?

All images that are in this blog have been created or edited using nothing but the iPad and this blog was written on the iPad.

Hello and how the hell are you? If this is your first time here thanks for stopping by. In this blog we are going to be going over how and why the iPad 10th Generation is good enough for just about everything. To start this off right I need to give y’all a back story of who I am and how I love to compute. It all start back in 2010 I was in college and the main device because money was tight (and nothing has changed lol). I was using a netbook to do my college work and life was good the form factor was perfect for the way that I wanted to go about my business at the time. Then Apple announced the iPad and I was like oh heck yes a computer that is touch just like my phone.

The idea of using the iPad as my main computer was born and I set off trying to use just the iPad as my main computer and while it work for the most part the lack of a real computer style interface was a challenge to say the least. The file management system was not even there at all so trying to work with different types of files was killing me at the time and I wasn’t even a photographer at the time. I was however still typing out lost of papers so using pages was not that bad and it worked for the most part. File support was also an issue because the iPad was so new at the time so that took time for the other platforms to truly get on board.

The last iPad that I bought to try and make this work was the iPad 4th generation and at that point i was out of college and life should have made using it easier but then came the fact that I was still not able to use the iPad as a computer replacement because of again the lack of the file manager that worked like I was used to on the PC or Mac. They finally came out with the files app and that was after I sold the iPad and moved to a regular laptop experience. I then picked up photography and the thought of using the iPad was not even on the board so to speak. The touch interface was something that I thought would be cool but the iPad at the time was still using IOS as the operating system so that meant that it was not going to play nice as a computer.

Fast forward to 2021 and I started to notice that the iPad had grown with the new iPadOS. This was still a version of iOS on the iPhone but it now was better at multi tasking so that means that it had a chance and the new files app that I seen on my phone was good and solid to the point that if setup right it could actually be a computer replacement for me at this time. So at this point the act of editing on the iPad was really going to happen for me. Not so fast the cost of the iPad and all the reviews online they stated that you had to have the iPad Pro line to get going for this. I was like well crap that means that I am not ever going to have my dream of using the iPad as my main device is gone. Well not so fast they actually put the M1 chip into the iPad so to me that has been using the M1 MacBook Air for the last year I should be good to go right.

I learned to have a wait and see attitude when it comes to the tech industry hence the first generation iPad. So I waited and waited for the echo system to grow into something that was going to work for my needs which have grown as well. The file manager had to handle the large amounts of files that I was going to be pushing through the iPad and the HDD that I use to store all my files on. The only issue that I was going to have was the apps were they finally at the point that I could actually use the iPad as a computer for everything. Well as luck woudl have it yes the iPad is actually at the point that you can use it as your main computing device.

There are things that you actually have to relearn when it comes to using a computer and that is the hardest part for me. The first thing that you will have to learn is that this device while it can use several different apps at a time it is not the best for this type of work flow so I would not try this if you are the type that has to have three or four apps running at the same time. The iPad is not the best at this. Then why would you use the ipad then you ask. You see for me the working on more than two apps at a time is not the way that I work because I need to focus on the task that I am working on. I can listen to music while typing and my thoughts will be in order and I am able to actually write out what I want. When it comes to photo editing the most that I have open is two apps open at one time. The reason for that is because I am usually working between the two of them for the finished look on a image.

Even then I am still only using one app at a time. This allows me to actually get work done on the images. The iPad puts me into an environment of working on one app at a time which is better for me. The 10th Generation iPad is not the fastest computer in the world so trying to use several apps at once is going to fill up the RAM fast and make it way to slow so trying to put together a HDR, Pano, or a focus stacked image is already going to task the hell out of the processor so working out of one to two apps is the max that you want to do to keep the computer running at top speeds. The act of editing really takes a tole on a computers RAM as those programs tend to store a lot of data in the RAM to run properly. This is why most of the software that you use states that you need a min of 8GB of RAM in order to run the program properly. Now with all that being said the iPad 10th generation if you are only using one maybe two apps at a time will be just as fast as all the other computers on the market today.

I have found that for actually working on the photos it is just as fast as my M1 MacBook Air and that is saying something. I am actually saying it the iPad base model to me is just as good as the M1 MBA. The iPad is running a chip that came out at the same time as the M1 but it is a mobile chip so the power should not be there right well when you use it on a computer that was designed for mobile first operations then it will be just fine. The iPad 10th generation to me is the best tablet computer that i have ever had. I am also looking at this not as a tech reviewer I am looking at it from the eyes of a person that had a dream and it has come true for me to be able to use the iPad as my main computer.

If you want a computer that is going to not break the bank and how the power that you will need for doing basic tasks and heavy photo editing then the iPad 10th generation is the computer that you need and that is it. I have been able to do things on this computer that most would not believe but hey if you don’t believe me go buy one and test it for yourself and you will see that if you manage how many apps you have open then you will not have to worry about it at all. Enjoy y’all
