Don’t Chase Every Genre Just Because You Can

Grand Tetons long exposure

Hello and how the hell are you? If this is your first time here, thanks for stopping by. In this blog, I have to admit that I was wrong about shooting several different genres of photography. I have found that I love shooting around six different genres. While it is nice to be able to say that I am good at shooting them, I have found that I was too open to shooting them. This is actually affecting my landscape images. I noticed that my drive for shooting landscapes is not what it used to be.

You see, the landscape genre is my bread and butter, so to speak. When I was working on so many different types of images, I was being pulled in many directions, and my main genre that I love the most was suffering. You see, we took a trip to Monument Valley recently, and yes, I loved my images, but they were missing that special sauce that I used to have. I was not seeing them pop like they used to. They were starting to look stale and uninspiring, so that means I have lost what really makes my images stand out. I have lost the ability to make images that really pop off the screen. I have been bending the knee to others to the point that I was not giving my all to the genre that I love.

There are three main genres that I absolutely love shooting, and really, it’s mainly two. Yes, I love shooting street photography, but it is a different style as it involves more of the buildings rather than people. I also truly love shooting landscape images with a more intimate style. You see, I look for a scene within the grand landscape and grab that shot over the grand vista type of images. I really love shooting the Milky Way, and I have found that the last two years have been lacking that genre.

I have been concentrating more on the people and how to take those images rather than working on what is true to me. I need to get back to the three genres that built my photography legacy and keep true to myself. I switched my name back to LocalNavy433 Photography as that is who I am at my core and how I shoot. So getting back to the start is the key for the right mindset for my shooting. I really don’t want to be known for portraits or weddings. So I am fucking done with shooting them and I am going to work on my way of shooting and that is it. I know what works and I know how to get the most out of an area to the point that I am going to be getting the images that are going to set me apart from the rest. I am going to start with only using the three lenses the holy trinity setup that I love.

The setup that I am currently going to be using is so simple and great for the way that I want to shoot. I have a Tamron 10-24 f3.5-4.5 for my wide-angle shots. The next mid-range lens is the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 that will give me the ability to shoot the majority of my work. For the long end of shooting I have the Sigma 50-150 f2.8 lens that is so sharp and clean. I am going to have just those three lenses on my Nikon D7500 which has all the features that I want with the better IQ that I want as well.

I am getting to the point that I just don’t want to carry around all the gear that I was, plus the lower-end lenses I feel were getting me subpar images. Know I know I loved the fact that I only had the need for two lenses, but that was actually getting me to hurry when out shooting. I want to take my time out on location. I was rushing my shots, and I was not getting the most out of my gear. I was actually holding myself back because I was wrong about how to. Actually shoot. The gear that I have is perfect for all the things that I want out of my shooting experience, to the point that I am going to get my images the way that I want, and I don’t need to rush. I can take my time getting the images, and that is the key for how I shoot.

I am so stoked about this choice and how my images are going to look. I wanted to just get the images back to the level that I was at when I was actually just shooting the genres that I wanted. The wildlife is also going to go by the wayside as it just makes too many things to shoot. I love the fact that I have the ability to grab the shots if I want them, but I don’t need them. The issue of trying to shoot too many things actually distracts you from working on what you actually want to shoot. So the whole point of this is to say that you need to not pick one genre to shoot. You actually need to work on the genres that you love to shoot.
