How to become the best photographer you can be

Hello and thank you for stopping by to read my blog and if this is your first time visiting how the hell are you?  I have been asking myself this question on how to become the best photographer that you can be?  This question is something I would like to address with this post.  Covering what it is that makes you the best photographer that you can be.

Trying to put all the pieces together for an image

One of the first things that you can do to become the best photographer that you can be is simple get out there and shoot.  I know it is something that should not be needed to be stated but with all the busy lives that people have that is something that needs to be said.  I was one of those busy people when I first started and the thought of getting out there to shoot was not something that was at the forefront of my mind.  As time went on I was able to see just how easy it was to get out and shoot.  I started bringing my camera with me (my phone at first).  This helped me realize that if I had my camera with me I would be more inclined to take a photo.

This allowed me to really start to see that you could just take snap shots on your way to the store and finding something to shoot was hard at first for me because I knew that I wanted to be a photographer but the starting point was the hardest thing to figure out.  I was taking pictures of walls, signs, posts, bricks just about anything that I could think of.  At this point I realized that I needed to do something more with my photos. I researched what composition was and how to use it in a photo.  This opened up so many more images for me to see while I was walking around.  This was the time that I was I was starting to learn how to tell a story with my images.

Becoming a Weather Gusser

You see learning to become the best that you can be in photography is just like anything else in life it takes time and you have to start with baby steps then learn how to walk.  When I was trying to arrange an image with a good composition I was learning how to walk with my photography.  This took about a year for me to reach this point but it was a fun year and I set a goal of taking three images a day and post them to Instagram.  This helped me with being able to put my work out there for others to see.  This also allowed me to gain the confidence in shooting and seeing the images before I took the shot.

The next step was putting all the hard work of taking the random photos, and learning what a good composition was together.  Now I was thinking about my shots planning when and where I was going to get the shot.  Who knew that you are also going to become a weather guesser as well.  I started studying weather maps on when the clouds were going to be at their best for getting the shots that I was after.  When the moon was going to be full and in the sky at just the right time to get the shot that I was after.  I also started looking a few weeks ahead to see if the sky was going to be clear when the new moon was here so I could get the darkest skies for my Milky Way images.

Testing new gear

There was a lot more to making a photo than just walking around taking snap shots.  All these steps allow you to learn when is the best time to get out and shoot.  This also allows you to know if a shot is going to be good or not.  The one thing that I learned the most by shooting every sunset and every sunrise that I could would be all the hard work it takes to get all the pieces of an image together for a great photo.  I have only just started down the road of being able to know when is the best time to go shoot.  I love to shoot in the middle of a snowy day and I love chasing the storm just to get that killer shot.  Once you learn all it takes to get that killer image you will also find that person that you have been searching for all these years.

You see taking all those steps to being the best that you can be in photography is a life lesson on how to take your time with the conditions that you are given to get the most out of the short time that you have while on location.  This is a life lesson that one has to take his or her time to see what is happening around which allows you to enjoy all the people in your life while you still can.  My wife taught me that lesson which really helped my photography.
