Hello and how the hell are you? If this is your first time here thanks for stopping by. In this blog we are going to talk about the real reason that you would want to shoot with a mirrorless camera in 2023. The first and less important reason is because that is what the marketing is telling you to shoot with. The second reason is all of the internet is telling you that is what you should be shooting. The third reason is as simple as preference on what you want to shoot with. Now I am going to go over the reasons in more depth to give you a better grasp as to why you would want to shoot with what you want to not what others are telling you. Remember that at the end of the day we all want the best chance to get the images that we are trying to make.

The first point was marketing that the camera OEM’s are pushing about all the new features that each of the newer models has to offer you. I mean who would not want to shoot with a camera that can lock focus on the eyes when trying to shoot portraits right. This would make getting that certain shot so much easier. The marketing is telling you as such but does that mean that you cannot get the same shot with older gear. Nope you most certainly can but the newer gear makes it easier and that the point of the newer tech. The easier it is to get the shot the better the camera right. Well that is up to the individual at the end of the day. The one thing that will help you decide is the features that you want out of a camera rather than what you cannot do with it.

The second point of the internet telling you that you should be shooting with this or that in order to get the shot. Man oh man after doing research on which camera is the best for me it was hard to decide because of all the opinions out there saying how good this model is over the older one. First let me say duh the newer models are going to be better that’s the point of making them. The hard part is digging through all the praise for this or that model to truly see what is best for you. The only way that you are going to find out what is best for you is to make up your own mind on what is the best for you. I found that the older DSLR’s are where it is for me but I also looked at all the aspects on how each system is going to work for me. I have also shot with the newer mirrorless systems and the DSLR’s and at the end of the day for me I wanted that chunky body that makes it feel like a real camera to me.

The last reason is actually the most important reason of them all and that is simply preference on what you want to shoot. I would love to shoot with the Canon R6 or the Nikon Z6ii because for me those are the best of the best bodies that I want to shoot with. I love the features that they offer the end user and the Image Quality from them is just outstanding for my needs. Yes o chose the ones that the file sizes will work with my laptop so that way there is no issue with editing. The only reason that I am not shooting one of those bodies is as simple as the battery life. I want a camera that I don’t have to worry about the battery life like I would with those bodies. Then you have the fact that at the end of the day I would have to get all new lenses for the bodies that I would be moving to. The overall cost of shooting mirrorless is twice as expensive and that is not something that I am wanting to deal with.
At the end of the day the Mirrorless Cameras are better in every way for features and it all comes down to that. The features are what makes it easier for you to get the shots so that is going to either help or hurt you. I love the basic features that the Canon 5D2 offers me and I call it my t6 full frame because that is what it is with its features. In today’s world the Canon 5D mark ii is as basic as it gets which to me helps me just worry about getting the shot with what I know and the camera is not doing the work for me. If I am going to upgrade it will be to the Canon 5D mark iv which is the type of body that I truly want to be shooting with.

What if I was to be shooting with a Mirrorless body you say and to answer that I can say that I had a pretty modern body with the Sony a6400 which has a lot of the features that you could want with the eye AF and all the bells and whistles that you could want. The only reason that I sold that was batter life I hated the fact that I could not even get through one portrait session without having to change the batter in fear of not being able to shoot. In my humble opinion the only thing that a Mirrorless body offers you is features and that is not enough for me to make the switch again. Enjoy from St Johns AZ y’all
